April is the start of the Beach Club season and the pre-season for summer – the perfect month to get everything prepared for the start of summer. That calls for a very special yacht, one that may not be the newest on the dock, but one whose presence will be felt at every port.
Presenting the M/Y Luna – the world’s second largest expedition yacht and one of the most beautiful superyachts with its long flat aft featuring one of the most impressive pools we have seen. The 115-meter superyacht is the pride of Azeri billionaire Farkhad Akmedov, who bought her in 2014 for $360 million from Roman Abramovich who originally paid $545 million for her in 2010. Even though the M/Y Luna was already one of the most impressive yachts at the time, featuring the largest pool on any yacht at the time of build, Akhmedov decided to retrofit her for $50 million to make her a truly extraordinary vessel that has become one of our favorite sights here in Monaco.
Priority in the retrofit for Akhmedov was to bring more focus to that absolutely incredible sun deck and to upgrade her with the latest defense and transportation systems. Since passengers truly are the most important cargo on a boat, the M/Y Luna features an anti-missile defense system, bomb-resistant doors, an anti-drone system, and even all windows are bulletproof. Seems almost more like a war-ship than an ultra-luxury vessel for the world’s elite.
However, once you step onboard you enter a world where the term “off-the-rack” is not known. The 9 decks feature 9 VIP rooms each 100 square meters (1,050 square feet) large featuring ensuite bathrooms with every counter top, accent, and accessory custom-designed for the M/Y Luna. While this colossus of a superyacht can host up to 18 VIP’s, it takes a full crew of 52 to operate her, demonstrating the complexity that it takes just keep her up and running. The 18 VIP’s get access to some of the most incredible toys, including 8 tenders, a mini-submarine and two $4 million limousine transport vessels that were specially designed just for the M/Y Luna.
When it comes to boarding the M/Y Luna, as with everything else on this superyacht, there are some truly spectacular ways of doing it. Not only can you access her through one of the two $4 million tenders that rest in their private garage inside the M/Y Luna, but she also features not one, but two heliports(!). Each heliport also has its own helicopter, and the best part is their registration names: the ‘M-LUNA’, and ‘M-LVNA’. Both helicopters, an EC155 and EC145 have more than enough combined space to evacuate all VIP’s if there is ever an emergency.
And finally, the masterpiece of the entire creation: the spectacular sundeck on the back, with its 20-meter outdoor swimming pool. While it came at a great expense of interior space on the M/Y Luna, it has given it some of the best real-estate under the sun at high-seas. In addition to its sun-kissed deck, there is a Beach Club on the lower aft with a bar to serve the perfect mojito for afternoon lounging. Behind the Beach Club you can find a spa fitted with a steam bath, plunge pool, and sauna. In case you want to get your morning run in, the fully-equipped gym has you covered with views unlike any other gym in the world.
While the M/Y Luna is truly a masterpiece, only a handful of people will ever get to experience it. That is because unlike many other yachts, you cannot charter her – she is for the exclusive use of her owner and his select guests. However, if you ever find yourself in the privileged position of boarding the M/Y Luna, cherish every moment of being on top of this masterpiece of a yacht.
